Imagine a group of creatives, most with no film experience, deciding to make a movie. It sounds unlikely, yet that’s exactly how their journey began. What started as a simple art hangout evolved into a full-fledged film project, all sparked by a fake movie poster. This post shares their story, the unexpected twists, and how a shared passion turned into a sci-fi pilot episode filmed right in our very own school gym!

This past week, alot of activity took place at the school and it was "out of this world"! Children of the Greylands... Follow them on Instagram @children_of_the_greylands

How It All Began: The Weekly Art Hang

A few years ago, they started a weekly open-door art hang at the Cumberland studio. It was a casual gathering where anyone could drop in and create. On any Monday evening, the space buzzed with creativity. Some people sketched or crafted at the big table, others sewed on machines, a few jammed with instruments in the corner, and some wrote stories on the couch. One person even spray-foamed a mirror on the floor.

This mix of activities created a welcoming environment where ideas flowed freely. No pressure, just time to explore and connect with others who loved making things.

The Spark: Dressing Up and the Fake Movie Poster

One night, everyone was encouraged to open the “tickle trunk,” a box filled with tablecloths, curtains, masks, and headpieces. They dressed up in surreal costumes for a photoshoot. This playful session grew into an ongoing photography project called Children of the Greylands.

About a year ago, they did another dress-up shoot to create a poster promoting a post-apocalyptic themed event. They designed the poster in the style of an old movie poster. It looked like a film all would want to watch. That’s when someone asked, “Should we make a trailer for this fake movie poster?”

From Idea to Script: Building the Story

That question led to brainstorming a story. They imagined a post-apocalyptic world without dreams. The idea grew into a script. Scott Bell, our cinematographer, reached out saying, “If you’re really going to make a film, I want in.” That message marked the start of building a team.

We gathered writers, actors, designers, and technicians. Everyone brought their skills and enthusiasm. We shared a vision to create an hour-long pilot episode for a sci-fi series. The story explored themes of survival, hope, and the power of dreams in a world that had lost them.

Filming in the School Gym: Challenges and Creativity

Our school gym became a filming location. Transforming a gym into a believable post-apocalyptic setting was no small task. The creative group used lighting, props, and set design to create the right atmosphere. The space was large enough for camera movement and allowed them to control the environment.

Filming in a temporary space meant adapting to limitations. They had to work around other tenants and noise. The team’s flexibility and problem-solving skills kept production moving smoothly.

What’s Next for Our Film Project

These artists are currently deep in production, editing the pilot episode. The goal is to share it with local film festivals and online platforms, hoping to continue the series and expand the story world.

This journey shows how creative ideas can grow unexpectedly. It encourages anyone with a passion to start small and see where it leads.

As for the Black Creek School...you never know what can take place..you will have to stay tuned!
